English as a Second Language Certificate

Program Overview

Open doors for your career and life by earning your ESL basic, intermediate or high intermediate certificate from FNU. Designed to help you build and improve your English abilities, it covers all four language areas: listening, speaking, reading and writing.

At the completion of this eight-month program you will be awarded a certificate of proficiency according to the level achieved.

Learning Outcome

The Basic 18 credit hour English as a Second Language program is designed to help you acquire converstational and basic functional skills in English. This program does not earn college credit.

The Intermediate 18 credit hour program will help you polish your fluency and become more comfortable using English.

The High Intermediate 18 credit hour program will provide you with opportunities to enlarge your vocabulary and manage more complex grammatical structures, as well as develop strategies for formal communication.

  • The ESL student is assigned into a program on the basis of a placement test.
  • Students who score beyond the Fourth Level are placed in the Intermediate Level.
  • The Intermediate Level Program is designed for students who have already achieved basic English functional skills.
  • The High Intermediate Level Program is designed for students who have already acquired an intermediate ESL command.
  • If you are going to apply for Title IV, please be advised that FNU may only admit students who need instruction in English to be able to use the knowledge, training, or skills they already have.
  • Students graduating from the ESL Basic certificate are not allowed to enroll in a career program.
  • Students who complete the Intermediate Level may be encouraged to take a diagnostic test for entry into a career program.
  • Upon completion of an Intermediate or High Intermediate program, graduates not able to find employment and/or increase present work status, will be allowed to enroll in a career program after a standard period of non-attendance.
